SEOUL — Bankrupt South Korean shipping giant Hanjin said Oct. 20 it plans to lay off 400 workers — more than half of its land-based staff  — as it attempts to right its corporate ship.

The Hanjin Shipping Co. bankruptcy hit the Port of Long Beach hard, but spared most others from year-over-year losses in ocean container traffic, based on port statistics released for September.

APL Logistics appointed Shigeo Mori as chief financial officer on Oct. 18, replacing Masahiko Oka at the helm of the company that was bought by Japanese firm Kintetsu World Express Group in February 2015.

PARIS — FedEx Corp announced Oct. 17 that it would invest $1.5 billion to double the capacity of its logistics activities at Charles de Gaulle International Airport in the Paris suburb of Roissy.

Schneider, the nation’s largest privately owned motor carrier and a major provider of intermodal transportation and logistics services, has decided to go public.

A $28 million settlement agreement between Schneider and a group of truck drivers who alleged the company did not properly offer them meal and rest breaks was approved this week by a California judge.

Container traffic at the two biggest West Coast ports was mixed in September, with a significant drop in Long Beach because of the Hanjin bankruptcy but a gain in Los Angeles, which had less exposure.
