U.S. rail intermodal traffic increased 2.2% in the week ended Nov. 8 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.

A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S, operator of the world’s biggest container line, said third-quarter profit increased as it cut costs and boosted box volumes.

Diesel’s national average price rose for the first time since June, gaining 5.4 cents to $3.677 a gallon, the Department of Energy reported Nov. 10. Meanwhile, the national average price of gasoline fell again, by 5.2 cents to $2.941 a gallon.

Truck/rail freight volume rose 5.1% to 4.21 million shipments in the third quarter, the Intermodal Association of North America reported, with renewed strength in the domestic container segment of the intermodal market.

XPO Logistics Inc. narrowed its loss on an adjusted basis of $7.3 million, or 13 cents, compared with $10.9 million in the year-earlier period as revenue growth continued and margins improved.

Expeditors International of Washington Inc. said third-quarter net income rose 11% to $102.4 million, or 53 cents per share, from $92.4 million, or 45 cents, as demand and pricing improved for air and ocean freight.
