Weekly intermodal rail traffic jumped 20.2% last week, reaching the highest levels of the year, the Association of American Railroads reported.
Traffic rose to 232,895 trailers and containers for the week ended Saturday, which was also 0.9% higher than the comparable week in 2008.
Container totals jumped 21.9% to 197,999 units, while trailers gained 11.7% to 34,896, AAR said in its weekly report.
U.S. railroads originated 300,292 carloads for the week, also a high for the year. That was 9.4% over the same week a year ago but 10.6% below the same week in 2008, AAR said.
