INDIANAPOLIS — The head of American Trucking Associations warned during a legal seminar here that further exemptions from Congress to electronic logging requirements for agricultural haulers could threaten safety on the nation’s roads.

This year’s International Roadcheck will take place from June 5-7, with a focus on hours of service.

A Senate committee on May 22 unanimously approved a bill that would require the Department of Health and Human Services to provide an explanation for a 15-month delay in issuing mandatory federal hair testing guidelines for safety-sensitive transportation employees such as truck drivers.

A new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data drill-down report showed that the number of trucks involved in fatal crashes increased in 2016 by 3% from 2015, but said the “critical pre-crash event” for 73% of large trucks in fatal crashes was another vehicle, person, animal or object in the truck’s lane or encroaching into it.
