Norfolk Southern Corp. on Dec. 12 announced officially what had been expected for some time: that it will move its corporate headquarters from Norfolk, Va., to Atlanta.

NORFOLK, Va. ­­— CSX Transportation Inc. is suing Norfolk Southern Railway and the Chesapeake-based Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad, alleging that they have conspired to create a monopoly at Norfolk International Terminals by essentially boxing out CSX at the Port of Virginia’s largest container facility.

Enough already. That seemed to be the rallying cry for some truckers who got the chance on March 27 to vent about port congestion directly to the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners.

The Port of Virginia began phasing in a new appointment system for truckers calling on its biggest facility – Norfolk International Terminals – part of an effort to cut congestion as cargo volumes continue to grow.

The Port of Virginia’s import-container business for the first half of 2018, compared with the same period last year, is projected to outpace that of the nation’s major retail container ports overall, according to the Washington, D.C.-based National Retail Federation, the world’s largest trade group, and Hackett Associates, a consulting firm.

The post-New Year’s blizzard in Virginia did a number on the port.

The Port of Virginia just finished its best year ever for container volume, having moved 2.84 million TEUs, or boxes as measured in standard 20-foot units.

Container ships just keep getting bigger and bigger. Today’s top dog, the OOCL Hong Kong, can carry a mind-boggling 21,413 boxes – far more than the largest ship ever to call on the Port of Hampton Roads.

August turned out to be yet another record month for the Port of Virginia.
