The efforts of XPO Logistics less-than-truckload drivers to organize into unions have spread to Trenton, New Jersey, with 33 employees filing a petition with the National Labor Relations Board.

XPO Logistics posted its first full-year profit with Bradley Jacobs at the helm of the organization and also was profitable in the final quarter owing to strength in the less-than- truckload division.

XPO Logistics posted its first full-year profit of the Brad Jacobs era, with net income of $63.1 million, or 53 cents a share, compared with a $245.9 million loss in 2015, or $2.65, the company said Feb. 21.

XPO Logistics has won a contract to manage the primary parts distribution center in Memphis, Tennessee, for diversified manufacturer Cummins Inc., XPO said Jan. 11.

XPO shareholders overwhelmingly approved a plan Dec. 20 to increase the maximum number of shares the company can issue to executives as compensation, to 2.5 million shares from 500,000, easily overcoming opposition from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

XPO Logistics and Sealed Air teamed up last month to announce a new product for shippers, a partnership that could reopen the discussion about how efficient packaging can boost profits for trucking companies, experts said.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is concerned about a proposed change at XPO Logistics that would increase the maximum number of shares it can issue as compensation 400%, from 500,000 shares to 2.5 million, the union wrote in a Dec. 1 letter to the company’s board of directors.

XPO Logistics reported a profit in the third quarter compared with a loss last year, another sign that the company has rebounded from the losses it suffered from since 2013.
