Trucking hauled less U.S. freight to Canada and Mexico in 2016 than 2015, according to March 2 data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The U.S. isn’t bound by decisions made at the World Trade Organization, President Donald Trump’s administration said in outlining a new trade agenda that promises to root out unfair practices by foreign countries.

Mexico’s top trade negotiator doubled down on threats to break off talks to rework Nafta, saying his country will walk away if the U.S. insists on slapping duties or quotas on any products from south of the border.

WASHINGTON — A disruption of trade agreements with Mexico has the potential of hindering the country’s flow of products with its southern neighbor, freight executives told a Senate panel Feb. 15.

A coalition of at least 16 House Democrats, led by Oregon’s Peter DeFazio, said Feb. 16 it will file a “Blueprint for America’s New Trade Policy,” urging President Trump to fulfill his campaign promises and negotiate a thorough overhaul of the North American Free Trade Agreement or withdraw from the 1994 agreement.

So far, President Trump has mostly declared policy 140 characters at a time, or through flurries of executive orders. But history shows that trade deals, a major priority for the new administration, are the opposite of quick tweets: a painstakingly slow process.
